Dr. Ariane Eroy is a psychodynamic and transpersonal psychologist who has spent 25 years working in community mental health clinics. (Her academic research focused on prisoner re-entry.) Her understanding is not merely informed by psychoanalytic psychology, politics, and the environment but also yoga, the works of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky’s Fourth Way, Alice Bailey’s Theosophy, the writings of Benjamin Creme, and the Masters of Wisdom on Esoteric Christianity.

She believes that modern psychology needs to foster diverse kinds of healing, and promote each individual’s evolutionary trajectory, as well as explore the psychological meaning underpinning social change. 

Dr. Eroy maintains that the symbolic nature of events provides us with essential keys to our times.  These keys can fortify us, while clarifying what is ours to do– especially in light of the the Climate Emergency, and as more and more people strategically work towards establishing peace, justice, and sharing moving forward.

More than 17 million people in the U.S. have had confirmed coronavirus infections and more than 310,000 have died of COVID-19. Tens of thousands of new cases are reported daily nationwide, and California has had over 23,000 deaths. There is hope with the rollout of vaccines, but it will be some time before we can be confident of our health and safety.

I was joined by Dr. Christine Doyle. So grateful she took time to answer some of our questions.

Dr. Christine Doyle is a physician trained in anesthesiology and critical care. She practices in the Silicon Valley, and is the Immediate Past President of the California Society of Anesthesiologists (CSA), and a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiology. As President of the CSA when the coronavirus pandemic hit, Dr. Doyle was responsible for initial recommendations about protective equipment, and performing surgery, for members of the society.  She also provided expert background information for state officials who were developing guidelines and changing protocols for California healthcare systems. She continues to serve as a leading voice in professional medical association activities through political advocacy, engaging with the media, and keeping anesthesiologists informed of key issues facing their specialty.

It’s often difficult to separate health information from health misinformation. What are reliable sources? Are you more likely to believe a dramatic story about a disease rather than a recent study in a medical journal? Is what you are reading about the Covid-19 pandemic based on science or are social media sites spreading news that is even more contagious than the virus?

My guest, Dr. Seema Yasmin, has written a book called Viral BS: Medical Myths and Why We Fall for Them, where she dispels common myths and casts a critical eye on the cultural misconceptions, disinformation, and conspiracy theories surrounding health.

Dr. Seema Yasmin is a Stanford professor, medical analyst for CNN, and science correspondent for Conde Nast Entertainment. She is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, medical doctor, disease detective and author, known for her reporting on Ebola and Zika. Her new book is Viral BS: Medical Myths and Why We Fall for Them. Dr. Yasmin was a disease detective in the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention where she chased outbreaks in maximum-security prisons, American Indian reservations, border towns, and hospitals. This pandemic has brought an unprecedented amount of stress to parents as they figure out how to hold down their jobs while having their kids doing school from home. Unlike people who have chosen to provide their children with homeschooling, most parents want their kids in school with a trained teacher…and out of their hair. But we must all think about what we can do that preserves the loving relationships in the family, and work together to make a plan that accounts for everyone’s needs.

Denise Pope, Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer at the Stanford University Graduate School of Education, where she specializes in student engagement, curriculum studies, qualitative research methods, and service learning. She is co-founder of ​Challenge Success​, a research and intervention project that provides schools and families the tools they need to raise healthy, motivated students. Challenge Success is an expanded version of the SOS: Stressed-Out Students project that Dr. Pope founded and directed from 2003-2008. She is the author of, ​”Doing School”: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students​, which was awarded Notable Book in Education by the American School Board Journal, 2001, and lead author of ​”Overloaded and Underprepared: Strategies for Stronger Schools and Healthy, Successful Kids.”  She also co-hosts the Stanford University SiriusXM radio show called “School’s In.”

Dr. Pope lectures nationally on parenting techniques and pedagogical strategies to increase student health, engagement with learning, and integrity. She is a 3-time recipient of the Stanford University School of Education Outstanding Teacher and Mentor Award and was honored with the 2012 Education Professor of the Year “Educators’ Voice Award” from the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences.
